Breeding better dogs
Why I Insist on Breeding Only from Healthy, Robust Parents
I’ve been around dogs my whole life and I’ll tell you straight: a puppy’s future starts long before it’s born. It starts with the parents — how they move, how they recover, how they behave when they’re given room to be dogs. That’s why I built our program around something simple but powerful: space, nature, and careful observation.
People often ask me, “Robert, why does property size matter?” The short answer is this: you can’t properly judge a dog’s fitness, joints, temperament or stamina in a small backyard, on a leash, or in a cramped kennel. You need to see them run, play, change direction, and recover on varied ground — and that’s exactly what our Ballan paddocks give us.

Seeing is believing — the limits of paperwork
Don’t get me wrong: DNA testing and veterinary screens are essential. We run all of those at Bredwell Puppies. But paperwork alone can miss what you only spot when a dog is allowed to move naturally — subtle stiffness, uneven gaits, poor recovery after sprints, or behaviour under real-world stimuli. I’ve watched dogs with perfect lab results that weren’t right in practice, and I’ve seen dogs with excellent temperaments and robust physiques that tests alone couldn’t fully explain.
On our property, the dogs have room to show me:
how their joints hold up when they sprint and land from a jump,
whether their muscle tone is consistent across different types of movement,
how they cope with uneven terrain and sudden turns,
and how they interact socially when given freedom.
These are the things that tell me whether a dog is genuinely sound enough to be a parent.
Why a “natural” environment matters
A fenced lawn is not the same as open fields with varied terrain. At Bredwell Puppies our dogs run on grass, hill, and firm ground. They chase, climb, leap and stop on a dime. That natural variety reveals real endurance and coordination — and it’s these traits I want passed down.
Natural exercise builds the kind of musculature and joint resilience that supports healthy litters. It also reveals temperament in a way the clinic doesn’t: a dog’s curiosity, confidence, social skills and stress response are plain to see when they’re free to explore and play. A confident, well-socialised parent will, more often than not, raise confident, well-adjusted puppies.

What we do — observation + testing = responsible breeding
Here’s how we make breeding decisions at Bredwell Puppies:
Daily supervised free-running: Our dogs have scheduled runs across paddocks. I watch them run together, because group play reveals how they behave under excitement and how quickly they recover.
Behavioural observation: I observe how dogs respond to novel sounds, objects, and people. Calm resilience matters as much as physical soundness.
Fitness monitoring: We track weight, muscle tone and recovery rates. A dog that can’t maintain fitness through regular exercise won’t be used for breeding.
Full health screening: Every breeding dog undergoes breed-relevant DNA testing and veterinary health checks.
Long-term welfare: Our breeding dogs are family members, not disposable breeders. Ongoing preventive care, enrichment and quality feeding are non-negotiable.
This combination of real-world observation and rigorous testing is how I sleep at night knowing I’ve done my best for the puppies and the families who will bring them home.
Why many breeders can’t — or don’t — do this
Let’s be blunt. Many high-volume breeders, backyard operations and urban hobbyists simply don’t have the land or the time for this level of observation. Dogs kept on short runs or indoor-only setups don’t get to demonstrate endurance or natural gait. Crowded kennels and a focus on quick turnover mean less time watching dogs across seasons and conditions.
That’s where problems creep in. When a puppy buyer chooses on price alone or based on cute photos, they risk inheriting hereditary issues, poor temperament, or hidden physical problems that only show up later.
The benefits for your future puppy
When you buy a puppy bred from parents we’ve personally observed in a natural environment, you’re more likely to end up with:
stronger joints and better muscle development,
a balanced temperament suited to family life,
fewer hereditary health issues down the line,
and a smoother, less stressful start for both the puppy and your family.
