Are Cavoodle Good With Children?

As a trusted Victorian Minister-Approved breeder, here at Bredwell Puppies, we’ve had the pleasure of raising and placing many Cavoodle puppies into loving family homes across Australia. One of the most common questions we get asked is: Are Cavoodles good with children? In our experience, the answer is a resounding yes—but let’s explore why.

What is a Cavoodle?

The Cavoodle (also known as a Cavapoo) is a designer breed that combines the gentle nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. At Bredwell Puppies, we specialise in breeding Toy and Mini Cavoodles that are not only gorgeous and affectionate but also raised in a family environment to ensure they’re well-adjusted and confident.

Cavoodle Temperament: Why Families Love Them

Our Cavoodles have gone on to become cherished members of households with young children, teens, and even special needs family members. Here’s why we believe they’re such a great fit for families:

1. Gentle and Affectionate

Cavoodles are incredibly people-oriented. Raised with the right socialisation from an early age (as we do here at Bredwell), they develop a natural gentleness and love of cuddles. They’re patient with children and tend to form strong bonds with their young companions.

2. Smart and Easy to Train

Thanks to their Poodle heritage, Cavoodles are quick learners. We start their early training from as young as 3 weeks of age—getting them used to routine, people, and different sounds. Families often tell us how amazed they are at how quickly their Cavoodle pup adapts to household life.

3. Playful but Calm

Cavoodles have an energy that matches kids—they’ll happily play fetch in the backyard or run through the house during a game of tag. But they’re also content to curl up on the couch after a big day, which makes them well-suited to busy families who need a calm companion too.

4. Perfect Size for Kids

Our Toy Cavoodles, in particular, are small enough to be non-intimidating for young kids, yet sturdy enough to enjoy a bit of rough-and-tumble play (always supervised, of course!).

Tips for Families: Raising a Cavoodle with Children

Having placed many Cavoodles into family homes, we always offer a few key pieces of advice:

Supervise Early Interactions

Like with any dog breed, it’s important to guide young children on how to interact respectfully. A Cavoodle is patient—but they still need to feel safe.

Teach Respect and Boundaries

We recommend teaching kids how to gently pet and handle the puppy, avoid interrupting mealtimes, and recognise when the dog wants space. Our Cavoodles are raised around children, so they’re used to noise and touch—but mutual respect makes the bond stronger.

Engage Their Minds

We always remind families that Cavoodles are bright little dogs. Games, short training sessions, and mental challenges (like food puzzles) keep them happy and well-behaved. Active play with kids can be a great outlet for their energy.

Grooming Cavoodles in a Family Home

Their coats do need care. We recommend brushing several times a week and visiting a groomer every 6–8 weeks. A well-groomed Cavoodle not only looks adorable but also feels more comfortable—especially important if kids are snuggling up close!

Are Cavoodles Hypoallergenic?

While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, many families with mild allergies have found Cavoodles a good match. Their low-shedding coat makes them more manageable for allergy-sensitive households. We always encourage prospective families to meet a Cavoodle in person if allergies are a concern.

Final Thoughts from Bredwell Puppies

So, are Cavoodles good with children? In our experience—absolutely. When raised with love, socialisation, and care (as we do here at Bredwell Puppies), they grow into loyal, affectionate, and well-mannered companions. They’re a breed that genuinely thrives in a family environment.

If you’re thinking about adding a Cavoodle to your family, we’d love to hear from you. Our puppies are raised in a safe, enriching environment and come ready to start their new life as part of your family.
