Registered Breeders

Why Choosing a Registered Breeder Matters When Buying a Puppy

When looking for a new puppy, finding a registered breeder is crucial to ensuring your future pet’s health, welfare, and ethical breeding practices. However, the term registered breeder can be misleading. Not all breeders who claim to be “registered” operate under the same rigorous standards. Understanding the difference between various breeder registrations and approvals is essential when making an informed decision.

What Does “Registered Breeder” Mean?

In Australia, a registered breeder is typically a member of a breed club, such as Dogs Australia (formerly ANKC) or another state-based association. However, membership alone does not necessarily guarantee ethical breeding or high animal welfare standards. Some breeders register with local councils or industry bodies, but their requirements may vary significantly.

For the highest standards of care, you should look for breeders who hold government accreditation as an Approved Commercial Dog Breeder under Victoria’s strictest animal welfare regulations. This status ensures breeders meet high standards for housing, veterinary care, and ethical breeding practices. (Read more from RSPCA Australia)

What Is an Animal Welfare Approved Commercial Breeder?

In Victoria, an Animal Welfare Approved Commercial Breeder is a breeder that has successfully passed the Victorian Government’s strict approval process. This process ensures the highest standards in dog breeding and animal welfare.

To obtain this approval, breeders must:

Submit a detailed application outlining breeding practices, property details, and animal care procedures.
Pass an extensive property inspection to verify compliance with animal welfare laws.
Gain ministerial approval from the Victorian Minister for Agriculture.
Undergo regular audits to maintain accreditation.

Only breeders who meet and maintain these high standards can use the Animal Welfare Approved Commercial Breeder logo, which signifies that the breeder has been assessed and approved by the Victorian Government.

What Does the Animal Welfare Approved Commercial Breeder Logo Mean?

Animal Welfare Commitment – Puppies are raised in a humane environment with proper veterinary care, socialisation, and enrichment.
Regular Audits and Inspections – Approved breeders undergo ongoing compliance checks to maintain their status.

Is Bredwell Puppies a registered breeder?

Yes.  We’re asked this question often.  There are different types of “registered breeders” and it’s important to understand that although a breeder may claim to be “registered” many are not actually regulated or only undergo very weak regulation.  Bredwell Puppies is a registered Victorian Minister Approved Breeder.  This means we undergo the strictest of all regulations and must receive a recommendation by the Chief Veterinary Officer of Victoria before we are even considered being approved by the Victorian Minister of Agriculture.  There are very few Victorian Minister Approved Breeders since the standards and regulations are so high.

What is a Victorian Minister Approved Breeder?

Victorian Minister Approved breeders really are the gold standard when it comes to levels of animal welfare and consumer protections.  Victorian Minister Approved Breeders must abide by the strictest code of practice for any dog breeder in Australia and are the only registered breeders that undergo actual physical inspections.  These inspections include the physical inspection of each dog, puppy and the environment they live in as well as the breeder’s breeding program.

What is the difference between a professional dog breeder and a backyard breeder?

A professional dog breeder is someone who breeds dogs as a business or as a full-time occupation and has a thorough knowledge of genetics, breeding practices, and the needs of the specific breed of dog they are working with. Professional dog breeders should also be familiar with any breed-specific health issues and should be committed to producing healthy, well-adjusted puppies. In contrast, a backyard breeder is a person who breeds dogs without any professional training or expertise, often in their own backyard. Backyard breeders may not be knowledgeable about genetics, breeding practices, or the specific needs of the breed they are working with and may not follow good breeding practices.

What should I look for in a reputable dog breeder?

When looking for a reputable dog breeder, it is important to do your research and ask the right questions. Some things to consider include:

  • The breeder’s knowledge and experience with the breed
  • The living conditions of the breeding dogs and puppies
  • The health and genetic history of the breeding dogs
  • The breeder’s willingness to answer questions and provide information about the puppies and their parents
  • The breeder’s willingness to provide references or to allow you to speak with previous puppy buyers
What is a puppy farm?

A puppy farm, also known as a puppy mill, is a commercial dog breeding facility that is focused on maximizing profits at the expense of the welfare of the dogs. Puppy farms often have poor living conditions for the dogs, including overcrowding, lack of socialization, and insufficient medical care. The puppies produced at these facilities are often sold through pet stores, online marketplaces, or directly to consumers.

Puppy farms can be detrimental to the health and well-being of the dogs involved. The dogs are often kept in small, crowded cages and may not receive proper nutrition, medical care, or socialization. As a result, puppies from puppy farms may have health problems or behavioral issues that can be expensive and time-consuming to address. In addition, the mass production of puppies at puppy farms can contribute to the overpopulation of pets and the problem of animal homelessness.

It is important to carefully research where a puppy comes from before purchasing one. It is generally recommended to adopt a pet from a reputable animal shelter or to buy from a responsible breeder who follows good breeding practices and raises the puppies in a healthy and humane environment.

What is a backyard breeder?

A backyard breeder is a person who breeds dogs without any professional training or expertise, often in their own backyard. Backyard breeders may breed dogs for a variety of reasons, including to make money, to show off their dogs, or simply because they enjoy the process of breeding.

However, backyard breeders are often not knowledgeable about genetics, breeding practices, or the specific needs of the breed they are working with, and they may not follow good breeding practices. As a result, puppies produced by backyard breeders may be at a higher risk of developing health problems or behavioral issues.

Backyard breeding can also contribute to the overpopulation of pets and the problem of animal homelessness. It is generally recommended to adopt a pet from a reputable animal shelter or to buy from a responsible breeder who follows good breeding practices and raises the puppies in a healthy and humane environment.

Why should I avoid backyard breeders?

There are several reasons why someone may want to avoid purchasing a puppy from a backyard breeder:

  1. Health concerns: Backyard breeders may not have the knowledge or resources to properly care for their puppies, which can result in health problems such as infections, genetic disorders, and other serious conditions. These health issues can be costly to treat and can significantly reduce the quality of life for the puppy.

  2. Poor breeding practices: Backyard breeders may not follow responsible breeding practices, such as screening for genetic diseases or ensuring that the puppies are well-socialised. This can result in puppies that are less healthy and less well-adjusted than those from reputable breeders.

  3. Unreliable care: Backyard breeders may not provide proper care for their puppies, such as proper nutrition, medical attention, and socialisation. This can have negative impacts on the puppies’ health and development.

  4. Lack of support: Reputable breeders typically offer ongoing support to their puppy buyers, including advice on training and care. Backyard breeders may not offer this support, leaving puppy buyers on their own to deal with any issues that may arise.

Overall, while purchasing a puppy from a backyard breeder may seem like a less expensive option, it can come with significant risks and may not be the best choice for the puppy or the potential owner. It is generally recommended to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder who follows responsible breeding practices and provides ongoing support to their buyers.

What is a professional breeder?

A professional dog breeder is someone who breeds dogs as a business or as a full-time occupation. Professional dog breeders are typically involved in the breeding, raising, and selling of puppies, and they may specialize in a particular breed of dog.

To be considered a professional dog breeder, a person typically needs to have a thorough knowledge of genetics, breeding practices, and the needs of the specific breed of dog they are working with. Professional dog breeders should also be familiar with any breed-specific health issues and should be committed to producing healthy, well-adjusted puppies.

Professional dog breeders should follow good breeding practices, including testing for and breeding only genetically sound dogs, providing proper socialisation and care for the puppies, and ensuring that the puppies are placed in suitable homes. It is generally recommended to research a breeder thoroughly before purchasing a puppy to ensure that they are reputable and follow good breeding practices.

What is a puppy scam?

A puppy scam is a fraudulent scheme in which a person or group claims to be selling puppies, either online or in person, but does not actually have any puppies available for sale. The scammers may ask for a deposit or payment in advance, but then either do not deliver the puppy or deliver a sick or unhealthy puppy. Puppy scams are often advertised on websites, social media, or classified ad websites, and may use stolen photos or fake documents to appear legitimate.

To avoid falling victim to a puppy scam, it is important to be cautious when buying a puppy online or from a breeder you have not met in person. It is always best to ask for references and to do research on the breeder or seller before agreeing to buy a puppy.

What are the benefits of finding a puppy from a larger professional breeder like Bredwell Puppies?

There are a number of advantages to choosing a dog breeder who has a large number of breeding dogs compared to a smaller breeder. Here are a few key benefits:

Larger gene pool: One of the main advantages of choosing a breeder with a larger number of breeding dogs is that they have a larger gene pool to work with. This can help to reduce the risk of genetic disorders and other health issues that can be common in some breeds.

More experience: A breeder with a larger number of breeding dogs is likely to have more experience in breeding, raising, and caring for puppies. This can be beneficial in terms of getting accurate and reliable information about the breed, and can also give you peace of mind knowing that your puppy has been well cared for.

Greater variety: A breeder with a larger number of breeding dogs is more likely to have a greater variety of puppies available. This can be helpful if you are looking for a specific color or size, or if you want to choose from a larger selection of puppies.

Better resources: A breeder with a larger number of breeding dogs is likely to have better resources and facilities for raising and caring for puppies. This can include things like larger kennels, more experienced staff, and access to veterinary care.

More accountable: A breeder with a larger number of breeding dogs is more likely to be held accountable for their breeding practices. They may be more likely to be inspected by regulatory bodies and to adhere to best practices in breeding, raising, and caring for puppies.

While there are certainly good breeders with a smaller number of breeding dogs, choosing a breeder with a larger number of breeding dogs can offer a number of advantages. If you are considering purchasing a puppy, be sure to do your research and choose a reputable breeder who is committed to producing healthy, well-bred puppies.
